S.B. 1293 Summary

• Transfers administrative oversight of the Corrections Population Management Commission from the Department of Public Safety to the Judiciary.

• Replaces the Director of Public Safety with the Chief Justice as a voting member of the commission and requires the commission to meet at least once per quarter.

• Modifies commission membership by removing a judge and a private sector member focused on offender reintegration, and adding a substance abuse or mental health expert and an advocate for incarcerated individuals.

• Requires the Department of Public Safety to provide commission members access to internal reports and documents, and grants authority to conduct spot checks on correctional facilities subject to security protocols.

• Requires the commission's annual legislative report to include meeting summaries and data updates on the status of all commission recommendations; effective July 1, 2050.
