SB2494 - Elevator Mechanics Summary

• Establishes examination requirements for elevator mechanic licensure with a minimum passing score of 70 percent and prohibits applicants from reviewing failed examinations.

• Requires all licensed elevator mechanics to complete 8 hours of continuing education every two years prior to license renewal on June 30 of even-numbered years, with exemptions for those licensed within one year prior to renewal.

• Expands the scope of work for licensed elevator mechanics to include repair, troubleshooting, software updates, parameter changes, fault resetting, and system operation on all conveyances and related structural work.

• Updates apprenticeship requirements to include enrollment in programs registered with the U.S. Department of Labor and completion of at least 4.5 years (9,000 hours) of supervised work, replacing the previous 4-year requirement.

• Restricts remote interaction with conveyances to require presence of a licensed elevator mechanic, except for securing or locking operations within the same building or complex.
