S.B. 2557 Summary

• Allows Hawaiian homestead lessees to designate their adopted children as successors to their homestead leases, provided the adopted children meet the minimum Hawaiian blood quantum requirement prior to adoption.

• Modifies Section 209 of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, 1920 to recognize adopted children as eligible successors in the same manner as biological children when the lessee fails to designate a successor.

• Applies to all valid leases issued under Section 207 of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, 1920 existing on or after the effective date of this Act.

• Takes effect upon approval by the Governor with the consent of the United States Congress.
