SB 2661 - Sustainable Development Goals

• Codifies Hawaii's commitment to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by adding them to Chapter 226 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, effective January 1, 2112.

• Directs all state agencies to take action to achieve the sustainable development goals and their specific indicators by 2030, unless otherwise specified in the statute.

• Incorporates Hawaii's existing sustainability initiatives (Aloha+ Challenge, Sustainable Hawaii Initiative, Hawaii Commitments) as references within the 17 UN goals.

• Establishes specific measurable targets across multiple areas including poverty reduction, food security, health, education, gender equality, clean water, renewable energy, economic growth, infrastructure, ocean conservation, and biodiversity protection.

• References interconnected goals such as 70% clean energy by 2030 (40% renewables, 30% efficiency), doubling local food production, reducing solid waste 70%, protecting 30% of watersheds and nearshore ocean waters, and achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2045.
