SB2676 - Sustainable Development Goals Summary

• Amends Chapter 226 of Hawaii Revised Statutes to codify the State's commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 (Life on Land), requiring all state agencies to take action toward protecting terrestrial ecosystems, forests, and biodiversity by 2030.

• Directs agencies to ensure conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, promote sustainable forest management, halt deforestation, combat desertification, and restore degraded lands.

• Requires protection of biodiversity and mountain ecosystems, prevention of wildlife trafficking and poaching, integration of ecosystem values into state planning, and implementation of the State's interagency biosecurity plan by 2027.

• Aligns with existing Hawaii sustainability initiatives including the Aloha+ Challenge (six goals by 2030) and the Sustainable Hawaii Initiative, as well as the World Conservation Congress Hawaii Commitments of 2016.

• Takes effect on January 28, 2045.
