S.B. 522 Summary

• Requires all child care facilities registered or licensed by the Department of Human Services to implement a written safe sleep policy for children less than one year of age to prevent sudden infant death syndrome and sudden unexpected infant deaths.

• Mandates that children less than one year old be placed on their backs to sleep unless a health care practitioner provides written instructions for alternate positioning.

• Requires child care providers to discuss the safe sleep policy with parents or legal guardians before enrollment and obtain signed acknowledgment that the policy was received and discussed.

• Requires all employees, household members, and volunteers to complete department-approved safe sleep training upon hire and annually thereafter, with facilities maintaining training records.

• Requires child care facilities to report to the department within one working day any deaths of children, employees, or household members, and any illness or injury resulting in a child's hospitalization.
