HB 1197 Summary

• Increases Hawaii's minimum wage to $12.00 per hour on January 1, 2020, $13.50 per hour on January 1, 2021, and $15.00 per hour on January 1, 2022

• Beginning September 30, 2022, and annually thereafter, the Department of Labor shall establish the minimum wage rate at 75 percent of the most recently published U.S. Department of Labor median hourly wage for all occupations in Hawaii

• Modifies the tip credit provisions to allow employers to reduce wages on account of tips if combined earnings equal at least $5.00 per hour more than the applicable minimum wage and the employee regularly receives more than $20.00 per month in tips

• Requires employers electing to use the tip credit to inform affected employees beforehand with relevant documentation

• Takes effect July 1, 2019
