HB 1440 Summary

• Establishes a temporary commission to develop and implement initiatives recognizing former President Barack Obama, his historic legacy, and his impact on Hawaii, administratively placed within the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism.

• Commission membership includes the governor, president of the senate, speaker of the house, DBEDT director, Hawaii Tourism Authority president/CEO, Office of Hawaiian Affairs CEO, University of Hawaii president, Honolulu mayor, and one community member with expertise on former President Obama appointed by the governor.

• Commission shall plan and coordinate state-sponsored and other events honoring Obama, solicit funding from public and private sources, and accept appropriations and donations.

• Commission must submit a report to the legislature no later than 20 days before the 2020 regular legislative session with proposed activities, plans, recommendations, and any proposed legislation.

• Commission terminates on June 30, 2021, with an unspecified appropriation from general revenues for fiscal years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021; Act takes effect July 1, 2019.
