HB 1531 - Assault Weapons Ban

• Prohibits distribution, transportation, importation, possession, sale, manufacture, gifting, or acquisition of assault weapons, with class B felony penalties for distribution and class C felony penalties for possession.

• Defines "assault weapon" to include selective-fire firearms, specifically listed semiautomatic firearms (AR-15, AK-47, Uzi, etc.), and semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns meeting specified feature criteria.

• Exempts law enforcement agencies, state department of defense, and armed services from the prohibition when weapons are used in connection with official duties.

• Allows individuals to voluntarily relinquish assault weapons to county police departments or the state department of public safety without penalty.

• Establishes mandatory minimum sentencing enhancements for felons using assault weapons and authorizes extended prison terms for offenders who use assault weapons while committing murder, kidnapping, robbery, sexual assault, or other serious crimes.
