H.C.R. 154 Summary

• Supports development of a Hawaiian Language Plan to accelerate normalization of ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) in government services, private sector activity, and tourism.

• Requests the Chief Executive Officer of Aha Punana Leo to chair a Hawaiian Language Plan Coalition composed of representatives from the Department of Education, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, University of Hawaii, Kamehameha Schools, and other Hawaiian language organizations.

• Requires the coalition to develop a plan with aspirational goals, benchmarks, strategies, and outcomes for the next 35 years building on past educational accomplishments including the P-20 Hawaiian medium education pathway serving over 4,000 students at 40+ sites statewide.

• Mandates the coalition submit the completed Hawaiian Language Plan to the Legislature no later than 20 days before the 2021 Regular Session convening, with the coalition ceasing to exist on June 30, 2021.

• Recognizes 2019 as Hawaii's Year of the Indigenous Language in support of the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages.
