Eddie and Paula Werner, lifelong Nānākuli residents, lost their son Kaulana in a drunk driving crash on April 24, 2016, and channeled their grief into advocacy for road safety and drunk driving prevention.

The Werners successfully urged the State Legislature to create Kaulana's Law, which Governor David Ige signed on June 10, 2018, establishing extended prison terms for people convicted of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident; the law became effective July 1, 2018.

The Werners partner with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and attend neighborhood board meetings as advocates for "Drive with Aloha" to support other families affected by alcohol-related crashes.

The Werners have collaborated with the Department of Transportation to improve road safety by adding crosswalks, lighting, and signage throughout the state.

The House of Representatives acknowledges Eddie and Paula Werner for their invaluable contributions to Hawaii and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for their continued success.
