S.B. 228 Summary

• Amends Chapter 6E, Hawaii Revised Statutes to require the Department of Land and Natural Resources to place historical markers indicating significant sites in the life of President Barack Obama, the forty-fourth President of the United States.

• Identifies specific sites for markers including Baskin-Robbins on King Street, Island Snow, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, Koko Crater Trail, Noelani Elementary School, Punahou Circle Apartments, Punahou School, and Sandy Beach.

• Prohibits marker placement at private businesses without owner consent; if a private business refuses, the marker shall be placed on nearby public property instead.

• Appropriates an unspecified sum from general revenues for fiscal years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 to the state historic preservation division for placing the historical markers.

• Takes effect July 1, 2019.
