Department of Education must develop a mandatory youth suicide awareness and prevention training program in collaboration with the Department of Health, based on existing Department of Health curriculum and materials.

Training program and model risk referral protocol must be provided to teachers, teacher assistants, administrators, and counselors at public schools and charter schools.

Complex areas and charter schools must report annually by September 15 on prior school year training and prevention activities completed.

Department of Education personnel and volunteers are protected from civil liability for acts or omissions related to the training program unless the conduct amounts to gross negligence, willful and wanton conduct, or intentional wrongdoing.

Act takes effect July 1, 2019, and applies beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.
