S.B. 488 Summary

• Department of agriculture shall conduct a study to determine what metrics accurately measure how much food is produced locally versus imported in Hawaii
• Study shall analyze four measurement methods: dollar value of total sales, weight in pounds, food-category-specific metrics, and other relevant methods
• Department of agriculture must consult with the department of business, economic development, and tourism on sales value measurement and with a specialized food security metrics firm to draft a recommended Hawaii food security metric system
• Department of agriculture shall submit findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the legislature no later than twenty days before the 2021 regular session
• $400,000 is appropriated from general revenues for fiscal year 2019-2020 to fund the study and consultations
