S.B. 893 Summary

• Prohibits counties with population less than 500,000 from rejecting number 1 and 2 plastic bottles for recycling solely because bottles have bottle caps made of non-recyclable materials (such as polypropylene or number 5 plastic).

• Requires affected counties to separate non-recyclable bottle caps from plastic bottles and dispose of them appropriately.

• Adds "PP" (polypropylene) to the list of materials that counties must assess for feasibility of recycling in their solid waste management plans.

• Appropriates funds to Hawaii County, Kauai County, and Maui County for fiscal years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 to cover costs of bottle cap separation and disposal (specific amounts blank in text).

• Takes effect July 1, 2050.
