HB 1185 Summary

• Establishes an artificial intelligence working group to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of applying artificial intelligence to Hawaii's economy and government operations.

• Working group shall evaluate artificial intelligence applications in other states/countries, competitive advantages for Hawaii, potential dangers, methods to encourage AI research and development in University of Hawaii and private business, and other relevant issues.

• Working group membership includes chairs of senate and house commerce committees (serving as co-chairs), house economic development committee chair, one senate member selected by senate president, director of business economic development and tourism, University of Hawaii at Manoa information and computer sciences department chair, and two individuals engaged in artificial intelligence research at private Hawaii companies.

• Working group shall convene no later than August 1, 2019, and submit a final report with recommendations to the legislature no later than twenty days before the 2020 regular session.

• Takes effect upon approval.
