HB 1343 Summary

• Extends Hawaii's family leave law to allow grandparents one week of unpaid family leave per calendar year to care for a grandchild with a serious health condition.

• Maintains existing four weeks of family leave annually for birth, adoption, or care of employees' children, spouses, reciprocal beneficiaries, siblings, or parents with serious health conditions.

• Allows employees to substitute accrued paid leave (vacation, personal, or family leave) for unpaid leave and permits use of up to seven days of accrued sick leave annually for grandchild care, unless a collective bargaining agreement allows more.

• Requires employers to request certification from the healthcare provider of the grandchild requiring care and permits employees to provide reasonable notice of foreseeable leave needs.

• Becomes effective July 1, 2050.
