HB 1901 Summary

• Expands the definition of "law enforcement officer" to include employees of county departments of the prosecuting attorney who are conferred general police powers by law.

• Grants the Law Enforcement Standards Board authority to review and recommend policies on use of force and to receive and investigate complaints relating to law enforcement officer certification.

• Requires the board to adopt rules establishing criteria for denial, suspension, or revocation of certification when an officer violated written departmental policy or used force not justified under section 703-307.

• Increases public representation on the board by requiring at least two of four public members to have advanced credentials in criminal justice, law, or related expertise.

• Takes effect upon approval.
