H.B. 2237 Summary

• Establishes a statewide drug disposal program within the Department of the Attorney General to provide safe, secure, and environmentally friendly disposal of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

• Requires the attorney general to work with law enforcement agencies, pharmacies, hospitals, and other authorized entities to ensure at least one drug disposal repository exists in each county, with repositories rendering drugs non-retrievable within two hours.

• Authorizes the attorney general to establish home drug disposal receptacles as an alternative or supplement to repositories for residents to dispose of drugs at their residences.

• Preempts state and county government entities (except the attorney general) from regulating the disposal of non-retrievable substances or restricting repository locations and home receptacle distribution.

• Establishes the Drug Disposal Special Fund to receive legislative appropriations, federal grants, and private donations, with funds available for grants to purchase, operate, or maintain repositories and distribute home disposal receptacles; effective July 1, 2050.
