H.B. 2618 Summary

• Appropriates funding to the University of Hawaii for fiscal year 2020-2021 to develop the Charles Atherton House and property in Manoa into a University of Hawaii Kupuna Center serving seniors.

• Kupuna Center shall include an intergenerational lifelong learning retirement and assisted living community, a live-in interprofessional health sciences student cohort focused on geriatric care, and retail and conference spaces.

• Establishes a new University of Hawaii Institute for Digital Health and Innovation to focus on telehealth and aging-in-place models, operated by the office of the vice president for research and innovation.

• Creates a healthy aging community resource center for all community members and caregivers, to be run by the University of Hawaii Center on Aging in partnership with other university units.

• Supports the University of Hawaii system office of strategic health initiatives in staffing and coordinating the UHealthy Hawaii initiative to improve senior well-being and address Hawaii's health workforce needs.
