• Amends the definition of "dangerous to self" to include persons who recently threatened or attempted suicide or serious bodily harm, or are gravely disabled.

• Defines "gravely disabled" as inability without supervision to prevent physical or psychiatric deterioration or satisfy needs for nourishment, medical care, shelter, or self-protection, where death or substantial injury is probable without treatment.

• Defines "psychiatric deterioration" as substantial impairment or decline of an individual's judgment, reasoning, or ability to control behavior.

• Expands the timeframe for "imminently dangerous to self or others" from 45 days to 90 days.

• Increases maximum emergency hospitalization period from 48 hours to 72 hours before patient must be released unless voluntary agreement or court-ordered evaluation is initiated.
