HB 689 Summary

• Requires health insurance policies issued on or after January 1, 2021 to cover 3-D mammography imaging (breast tomosynthesis) for breast cancer patients every three months or as recommended by the patient's physician.

• Applies to all accident and health insurance policies except those providing only specified disease coverage or limited benefits, including policies under chapters 431 and 432.

• Defines "3-D mammography imaging" as breast tomosynthesis, a radiologic procedure that acquires projection images over the stationary breast to produce cross-sectional digital three-dimensional images.

• Renumbers existing statutory subsections in Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 431:10A-116 to accommodate the new 3-D mammography coverage requirement.

• Takes effect on January 1, 2020.
