Hawaii's Kaneohe Bay Wave Energy Test Site was selected in 2012 by the Department of Energy and Navy as one of two wave energy test sites in the United States through a competitive process.

A prototype wave generator called Azura successfully produced 20 kilowatts of clean energy for Hawaii in July 2015, becoming the first wave technology device to successfully supply grid power.

Federal funding for the Kaneohe Wave Energy Test Site is scheduled to expire in 2022, and continued funding is needed to perfect the technology, develop permitting processes, and support public-private partnerships.

The Legislature urges the Department of Energy and Navy to renew funding for the test site to support Hawaii's goal of achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2045.

Certified copies of the resolution shall be transmitted to the Secretary of Energy, Secretary of the Navy, and President of the University of Hawaii.
