S.B. 1347 Summary

• Appropriates $400,000 for fiscal year 2019-2020 and $400,000 for fiscal year 2020-2021 to Weed and Seed Hawaii, Inc. to maintain the weed and seed program.

• Funds shall be distributed through the Department of the Attorney General as a grant pursuant to Hawaii Revised Statutes chapter 42F.

• The weed and seed strategy is a collaborative federal, state, and county initiative focused on four elements: law enforcement, community policing, prevention/intervention/treatment programs, and neighborhood restoration.

• The program targets violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated neighborhoods, with prior success documented in Kalihi-Palama, Chinatown, Waipahu, Ewa, and Ewa Beach areas.

• Effective date: July 1, 2050.
