S.B. 2121 Summary

• Amends HRS §711-1112 to add a new Class C felony offense for intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causing malfunction or breakdown of a public transit vehicle, system, or service that results in serious bodily injury or death.

• Expands the definition of "public transit vehicle" to explicitly include public paratransit vehicles, transit vehicles used for passenger transportation for fees, government-operated transit vehicles, school buses, and taxis.

• Modifies the statute title and offense language to reference "interference with the operator or operation" of public transit vehicles, broadening the scope beyond just the operator to include the vehicle's operation.

• Maintains existing Class C felony penalties for interference with transit vehicle operators through bodily injury or threats to cause bodily injury.

• Takes effect upon approval.
