SB 2368 Summary

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 1-13.5 to affirm that native Hawaiians have the right to revitalize, use, develop, and transmit their histories, language, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems, and literatures to future generations, consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

• Permits the use of macrons and glottal stops in the spelling of Hawaiian language words and terms in documents prepared by or for state and county agencies or officials.

• Voids any rule, order, policy, or other act that prohibits or discourages the use of macrons and glottal stops in Hawaiian language spelling.

• Takes effect upon approval.
