Police departments in counties with populations exceeding 500,000 must establish a working group to study the feasibility of purchasing and deploying explosion detection technology to locate and respond to explosions from illegal firearms and fireworks use.

The working group shall include the Attorney General, the police chief of the applicable county, and the prosecuting attorney of that county.

The working group must submit findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the legislature no later than twenty days before the 2021 regular legislative session.

The technology referenced includes systems like ShotSpotter, which can detect gunshots within forty seconds and locate crime scenes within twenty-five feet, currently used by more than ninety cities nationwide.

The Act takes effect on July 1, 2050.
