SB30 Summary

• Requires pharmacies dispensing controlled substances to provide patients with written notice about risks of improper drug disposal, including theft, accidental ingestion, environmental harm, and diversion for abuse.

• Mandates pharmacies make available at least one consumer disposal method at no cost or for purchase, such as at-home deactivation products or secured medication collection kiosks compliant with federal regulations.

• Requires pharmacies to provide written informational materials on proper disposal methods and medication take-back programs, with pharmacy staff available to answer patient questions.

• Applies these requirements to all prescription dispensing (initial, refill, renewal) regardless of whether patient is new or returning customer.

• Takes effect July 1, 2020.
