HI SB331

Requires motion picture theater owners/operators with more than two locations in Hawaii to provide open movie captioning during at least two showings per week (increased from one showing per week under previous law).

Mandates that at least one of the two captioned showings per week must occur on Saturday or Sunday to ensure accessibility for working and school-attending members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Eliminates the option for theaters to provide personal closed captioning systems using lightweight eyewear devices as an alternative to open movie captioning.

Makes the open movie captioning requirement permanent by removing the January 1, 2020 repeal date that was established in previous legislation.

Takes effect January 1, 2050.
