S.C.R. NO. 173 Summary

• Request the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to develop a plan recognizing, honoring, and memorializing Mary Kawena Pukui's contributions to preserving Hawaiian culture and language over fifty years of work at the Bishop Museum.

• Use funds from the Works of Art Special Fund to develop and implement a memorial plan, including determining an appropriate monument, statue, or similar memorial and selecting a suitable public site.

• Identify legal, financial, and cultural impediments to creating the memorial and propose solutions, including potential legislation.

• Executive Director of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts may establish a working group to support plan development and implementation.

• Submit a report with findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the Legislature at least twenty days before the 2021 Regular Session convenes.
