SR 167 Summary

• Encourages completion of The Nature Conservancy's feasibility assessment for reef insurance in Hawaii, scheduled for completion by October 2020.

• Directs the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Department of Transportation, state and county agencies, The Nature Conservancy, and other experts to cooperate in developing an implementation plan with nature-based coastal protection projects for presentation to the 2021 Legislature.

• Requests The Nature Conservancy share its feasibility assessment results and recommendations for nature-based solutions with the 2021 Legislature to protect Hawaii's coasts from flooding and inundation.

• Recognizes that healthy coral reefs can absorb up to 97 percent of wave energy and protect approximately $836,000,000 in coastal infrastructure annually from flooding.

• Directs transmission of certified copies to the Governor, Board of Land and Natural Resources, Department of Transportation, Hawaii Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission, and The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii.
