S.R. No. 53 Summary

• Requests state legislators to establish uniform procedures for custody, inventory, and care of protocol gifts received from foreign officials, federal officers, or officials from other states on behalf of the state or legislature.

• Requires each legislator receiving a protocol gift to maintain a written record containing the gift description, date received, and identity of the donor or organization that provided the gift.

• Designates all recorded protocol gifts as state property rather than personal property of the legislator who received them, and requires legislators to exercise reasonable care in maintaining these gifts.

• Permits protocol gifts and their records to be transferred upon a legislator's departure by remaining in the office for the successor legislator, transferred to the State Archives, or transferred to the State Foundation on Culture and The Arts.

• Directs certified copies of the resolution to be sent to the Governor, legislative leaders, State Comptroller, and Director of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
