Small business tenants at Kawaihapai Airfield generate over $12,000,000 in yearly revenues and employ over 130 people including flight instructors, pilots, and aircraft maintenance personnel.

The airfield is recognized internationally as a premier recreational skydiving and gliding destination, with the Travel Channel listing it as one of the best places in the world to skydive.

The Department of Transportation had announced plans to exercise an early termination provision as of June 30, 2021, despite the lease not expiring until July 5, 2024.
