SB 1387 Summary

• Requires all dog and cat owners to have their pets microchipped and register the microchip number and owner contact information with a microchip registration company.

• Mandates owners update microchip registration within 30 days when contact information changes, and requires new owners to update registration within 30 days of taking ownership.

• Requires animal control contractors and nonprofit animal rescue organizations to implant microchips in all stray dogs and cats without existing microchips.

• Directs animal control contractors to activate microchip registration company's found pet alerts to notify owners when their microchipped pets are found.

• Exempts animals under three months old, animals in designated population management programs, and animals brought into the State solely for dog or cat shows from microchip requirements; effective January 1, 2022.
