S.B. 25 Summary

• Permits minors to consent independently to medical care for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of HIV without parental or guardian approval.

• Minors who consent to HIV-related medical care shall not be liable for payment of treatment or prevention services.

• Parents or legal guardians cannot revoke consent given by a minor for HIV-related medical care.

• Expands the definition of "medical care and services" under Hawaii law to include prevention of sexually transmitted infections and replaces outdated terminology with "sexually transmitted infection."

• Authorizes physician assistants, in addition to physicians and advanced practice registered nurses, to provide medical care and services to minors; effective May 6, 2137.
