S.B. 279 - Marriage of Minors

• Requires child protective services unit of the department of human services to investigate and report to family court before approving any marriage where one party is a minor and the other party is more than five years older than the minor.

• Maintains existing Hawaii law allowing marriage for persons at least sixteen years of age, and allowing family court approval for marriage of persons fifteen years of age.

• Applies the new investigation and reporting requirement specifically to marriages involving an age gap of more than five years between a minor and an adult or older child.

• Takes effect May 6, 2137.
