S.B. 307 Summary

• Prohibits the manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of any firearm or rifle with capacity to fire ammunition of fifty caliber or higher, with exceptions for shotguns and muzzle-loading firearms.

• Adds the fifty caliber ammunition restriction to Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 134-8(a), which already prohibited assault pistols, automatic firearms, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, and certain ammunition types.

• States purpose is to strengthen Hawaii's gun safety laws, which currently rank among the strongest in the nation and earned an A-minus rating from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence in 2019.

• Takes effect on May 6, 2137.
