S.B. 694 Summary

• Codifies Hawaii's commitment to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals by adding them to Chapter 226 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes with specific indicators and targets to be achieved by 2030.

• Directs all state agencies, to the extent practicable, to take action toward achieving sustainable development goals including poverty reduction, food security, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water, renewable energy, economic growth, and environmental protection.

• Incorporates references to existing Hawaii sustainability initiatives including the Aloha+ Challenge, sustainable Hawaii initiative, Hawaii Commitments, and Paris Climate Agreement into state law.

• Establishes specific measurable targets such as 70% clean energy by 2030 (40% renewable, 30% efficiency), double local food production, 30% protection of priority watersheds, and 70% solid waste reduction.

• Takes effect July 1, 2050.
