HB 1240 Summary

• Authorizes courts to order forfeiture of retirement system benefits (interest, pension, annuity, retirement allowance) for law enforcement officers convicted of employment-related crimes to pay or reimburse defense costs incurred by the State or county.

• Requires law enforcement officers under investigation for felony offenses to be immediately placed on unpaid administrative leave pending investigation completion.

• Permanently bars law enforcement officers convicted of felony offenses from future employment as a law enforcement officer, private detective, or guard.

• Eliminates prior language allowing board discretion in revoking certifications for felony convictions if the employer agreed; makes felony convictions grounds for mandatory certification denial and permanent bar from law enforcement certification.

• Expands the Police Standards Board authority to permanently bar individuals from obtaining certification as a law enforcement officer.
