H.B. 1488 - Residence for Tuition Purposes

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 304A-402 to establish new residency criteria for University of Hawaii tuition purposes

• Allows students who received a high school diploma or equivalent credential in Hawaii within two years before enrollment to qualify for resident tuition at any University of Hawaii campus, including community colleges, if they are working toward an undergraduate degree

• Maintains existing residency requirements: students must have a bona fide resident parent or guardian (for minors) with 12 consecutive months of state residency, and cannot be claimed as a dependent by non-resident parents, with exceptions for child support orders

• Adds alternative criterion allowing students enrolled in a Hawaii high school for at least 12 consecutive months before enrollment to qualify for resident tuition

• Takes effect upon approval
