HB 1498 Summary

• Establishes "licensure by credentials" for dentists, allowing the board of dentistry to issue licenses to practitioners licensed in other states who meet specific qualification requirements without requiring Hawaii's standard examination.

• Requires applicants for licensure by credentials to have graduated from an accredited dental school, hold a current license in another state, be in good standing, and have actively practiced dentistry for at least five years immediately preceding application.

• Permits applicants to hold licenses from states requiring passage of the ADEX examination, its predecessor, or another nationally recognized clinical dental examination recommended by the American Dental Association.

• Expands dental licensure examination options to include any nationally recognized clinical dental examination recommended by the American Dental Association, in addition to the previously required ADEX examination.

• Takes effect on July 1, 2022.
