HB 1697 Summary

• Requires the Department of Education to provide comprehensive training for teachers and educational officers on sexual health topics including positive and accurate representations of LGBTQIA+ individuals, persons of color, and disability communities to destigmatize sexual health.

• Mandates that state-funded sexual health education programs include sexual health topics with positive and accurate representations of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and other sexual orientations and gender identities, persons of color, and disability communities.

• Maintains existing requirements that sexuality health education provide medically accurate, age-appropriate information on abstinence, contraception, and disease prevention methods.

• Allows the Department of Education to coordinate and contract with state agencies, county departments, or sexual health education experts to implement the training requirements.

• Effective date: July 1, 2050.
