HB 1977 Summary

• Allows dental assistants to perform limited supportive duties under general supervision of a licensed dentist in public health settings only

• Requires that dental assistants work directly with a licensed dental hygienist, who must be under supervision of a licensed dentist, with the dentist available for consultation

• Permits dental assistants to perform specific tasks including taking photographs and clinical recordings, exposing and processing radiographs, measuring vital signs, assisting with dental procedures, and transferring instruments

• Prohibits dental assistants from performing procedures listed in Hawaii Administrative Rules sections 16-79-69.5 and 16-79-69.10

• Effective July 1, 2060
