HB 211 Summary

• Authorizes the University of Hawaii and its community colleges to waive tuition for survivors of firefighters killed in the line of duty and their dependents.

• Eligible persons include: survivors of firefighters killed by traumatic injuries in the line of duty; spouses of firefighters permanently and totally disabled from line-of-duty injuries; and children ages 17-24 whose parent or guardian is permanently and totally disabled from line-of-duty injuries.

• Children eligible for waivers are limited to 54 months for baccalaureate degrees or the number of months required to complete their educational program for non-degree programs.

• Requires eligible applicants to meet standard admission requirements and be accepted on a space-available basis; institutions must verify eligibility through documentation including birth certificates, death certificates, court orders, and disability records.

• Act takes effect upon approval and expires June 30, 2030.
