H.B. 2242 Summary

• Requires health insurance policies issued or renewed after December 31, 2022, to cover standard fertility preservation services for individuals diagnosed with cancer whose cancer or treatment may adversely affect fertility.

• Applies to individual and group accident and health insurance policies, hospital and medical service plan contracts, and health maintenance organizations in Hawaii.

• Defines "standard fertility preservation services" as procedures consistent with guidelines from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine or American Society of Clinical Oncology, and includes storage of sperm or oocytes for one year.

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes chapters 431 and 432 to add new sections requiring fertility preservation coverage and updates health maintenance organization requirements to include the new benefit.

• Effective date: July 1, 2022.
