H.B. 318 Summary

• Amends Section 251-2, Hawaii Revised Statutes to modify the rental motor vehicle surcharge tax rate (current amount of $5 per day to be replaced with a blank amount to be filled in).

• Maintains existing exemptions from the surcharge tax when a rental vehicle replaces a vehicle being repaired, provided repair order documentation is retained by the lessor or repair dealer for two years.

• Requires lessors to disclose to the Department of Taxation the portion of remittance attributed to each county where the motor vehicle was operated under rental or lease.

• Takes effect on July 1, 2021.
