Department of Education may construct teacher housing facilities on public school campuses in partnership with the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation, and the School Facilities Agency.

Housing units on school campuses constructed or acquired after June 30, 2021, must be rented only to public school teachers with less than six years of experience or teaching in rural or hard-to-staff locations.

Rental rates must be affordable and comparable to existing teacher housing, with priority given to full-time teachers employed at the school where the housing is located.

Teachers who own other residential real estate are prohibited from renting housing at teacher housing facilities.

Effective date is July 1, 2050.
