HB 987 - Hearing and Vision Program

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 321, Part IX to reestablish and strengthen the hearing and vision program for children under the Department of Health.

• Establishes the program's purpose as increasing early identification of hearing or vision loss by creating consistent screening protocols, screener training standards, and data collection for quality improvement.

• Requires the Department of Health to set recommended standards for evidence-based screening protocols, screening tools, referral procedures, personnel qualifications, and data reporting on hearing and vision screening outcomes.

• Includes consultation and education components for students, parents, and health and education personnel regarding hearing and vision screening, treatment, and services.

• Takes effect upon approval.
