S.B. 2442 Summary

• Streamlines medical records review process for physician assistants by allowing controlled substance prescriptions to be included in existing review requirements rather than requiring separate seven-day review and initialing.

• For physician assistants with less than one year experience, requires supervising physicians to review at least 50% of records containing controlled substance prescriptions during the first six months and 25% during the next six months.

• For physician assistants with more than one year experience, requires supervising physicians to establish a regular sample review process that includes controlled substance records if applicable, with at least 30 minutes monthly audit and review.

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 453-5.3 to integrate controlled substance prescription review into the general medical records review guidelines established by Act 181 (2019).

• Effective July 1, 2022.
