S.B. 827 Summary

• Expands breast cancer screening coverage in health insurance policies to include an annual mammogram for women of any age with above-average breast cancer risk (determined by risk-factor modeling tool) or family history of breast cancer, effective January 1, 2022.

• Requires coverage for formal risk factor screening assessment using readily available risk-factor modeling tools for women age 30 or older, effective January 1, 2022.

• Requires coverage for supplemental breast imaging (MRI, digital breast tomosynthesis, or ultrasound) for any woman regardless of age when deemed medically necessary by American College of Radiology guidelines, effective January 1, 2022.

• Mandates the state auditor conduct an impact assessment report on the social and financial impacts of these new coverage requirements and submit findings to the legislature by 20 days before the 2022 regular session.

• Effective date of July 1, 2060 (applies to policies issued on or after January 1, 2022, excluding limited benefit or disease-specific coverage policies).
